What do you think of when you hear the word “addiction”? You probably think of drugs. Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, etc. But, how about more recreational things? Like, the Internet. You may be thinking, ‘The Internet? How can you be addicted to that?’. Well, the Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that has billions of websites of a wide variety. There are music sites, gaming sites, social networking sites, and so many more that one can use. They can keep you entranced and give great pleasure to use. People all over the world are connected to The internet at all times because they think of it as a necessity. And some can find it to be more necessary than others.
Though the Internet was intentionally created to help with productivity in the workplace, it is now used for more pleasurable activities. It can interfere with many daily activities. If you are diagnosed with IAD, Internet Addiction Disorder, you may find yourself neglecting your family and/or friends. You will want to be in front of a screen, instead out with your friends, or family. Soon, your life will revolve around your computer and you will forget about appointments and engagements.
But, IAD can do more than just hurt your social life. It can hurt your physical state, too. From spending most of your time handling and clicking a mouse, you may get Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Which is a pain or numbness in your hands or wrists. You can also have dry eyes or strained vision, from looking at nothing but a bright screen for longer than a couple hours at a time. Plus, you may discover you have a weight problem. Sitting around all day in front of a screen and getting little to no physical exercise can cause an increase in body weight. Backaches and neck aches are no strangers, either, to those with IAD.
